In addition to the adoption fee of $600, I will require a training deposit of $150 which is fully refundable upon completion of a training course.
Foster Update #2 - He is coming out of his shell and is getting more rambunctious and friendly. He initiates play with our 3 year old yellow lab but sometimes can get a bit rough. He is a very curious boy and I sense he has not experienced much time indoors. He likes helping me stack dishes in the dishwasher and will go out of his way to help me clean the dirty ones. He pulled out the bottom dishwasher shelf and tried to run through the house with it which is kind of funny. He barks at himself in the mirror as he doesn't recognize himself. He enjoys chewing toys but has not completely destroyed them. He really enjoys "killing socks" too.
He is deaf. He does follow our other dogs around and seems to follow their lead. He is very smart and thus far he has mastered several commands including come, sit and "good boy". We are trying to teach him a sign for stay and one for potty. It is very important that he makes eye contact when signing so he can understand what you want him to do. He is a quick learner and appears to be thriving with the signs. Franklin is smart and is learning sign language. He often cocks his head to one side in an attempt to determine what I want of him.
He has walked on a leash for short distances and does not pull. He rides well in the car and mostly looks outside the window when he's not napping on the drive. He is curious of his surroundings. He does not like to be left alone and will cry if he does not see his human. He likes to sleep in bed with us often leaning against one of us to make sure we are still there. Just a cuddle bug. The future family home for him should be dedicated to signing to him and being as comunicative and inclusive as possible. This boy deserves to be in an active loving home. Also, because he is so strong, he needs someone who will be patient and continue his training.
Foster Update - He is a very sweet boy with a healthy "lab-like" appetite. He uninvitingly shares food with our 3 year old lab, Pebbles, who gladly gives in so we separate him from the girls at meal time. He has done a bit of counter surfing and gladly will beg for human food if given a chance.
He has had minimal accidents inside the house and will stand by the back door to.notify us that he has to go. He gets along well with our female dogs and has initiated play with both of them. He loves to play fetch and will bring the ball back so we can throw it again. He has shown no aggression to the cats however has gone nose to nose with them for a friendly sniff. One gave him a quick swipe and thus he has learned his lesson.
We have not walked him on leash yet as we are waiting for him to heal from being neutered last week. A few of the stitches have loosened and we are having the vet look at it tomorrow. He does not jump up on the sofa however he seems to enjoy sleeping on the bed with us humans, cats and another dog. Franklin indiscriminately follows all residents around the house.
We have a good suspicion that he may be deaf or have very limited hearing. He doesn't respond to claps, loud noises, vocal calls, etc when standing behind him. He cocks his head as if he is trying to understand what is going on and startles easily if touched from behind. We are going to have the vet check his ears out too. I have researched some general hand signs to communicate with him ie come and good boy. He seems to have learned these signs relatively quickly and responds positively.
Franklin is best suited for a patient family who will work with to accommodate his needs He whines when left alone in a room, thus Im looking for a home placement where he won't be by himself for long periods. He also would benefit from a home with other dogs. He interacts and plays well with my 10 year old daughter so kids are okay as well.
