Foster Update #2 - The big handsome man wants you to know he is doing great and is learning more every day how to be loved. His favorite time of day is the morning. He gets sooo excited when we wake up and to celebrate a new day, he says "pets please". When I leave, even just to take the trash out, he is sooooo happy when I came back from being gone for soooo long. He is still skittish of most everyone, but is showing a little more trust. He let a new person pet him yesterday, and even accepted treats from him - this was the first time they met!! Coal is not a fan of being left alone, even when crated. When I have left for any amount of time, I crate and talk to him through our camera once he starts to get upset. It does seem to help him settle. On the first day of the new year, Coal decided he would like it to be the first day to take a neighborhood walk. He went with tail up even! No scared tail. He did get nervous when a couple cars drove by...pancaked but recovered very well after they went by. Coal is getting more confident every day and his foster is very proud of him! Foster Update #1 - Coal is doing as well as we can expect given how shut down he was when he arrived. - he is 100% house broken. - comes when you call him. - not overly interested in toys or anything other than chllin' out, likes squeaky toys if you sqeak them for him. - wags his tail when you talk to him. - happy to see you when you come home from a errand and break him out of jail (crate). - he doesn't want you to pet or love on him, but he also doesn't want you to leave him home alone. - sleeps well on a dog bed in my room overnight. Coal is going to need a while to learn that a hand brings love. Once he does, I think he is going to be a huge cuddle bug. It will likely be a few months before this handsome, sweet dude is going to be ready to entertain potential adopters. Introduction - Coal, a stunning beautiful boy, was a stray and landed in the San Diego County shelter where he did not do well at all. He was scared, stressed and had given up hope. Shelter staff and a LR volunteer began working with him and began establishing trust with him. After his very first day of being rescued and landing in his safe foster home. He began wagging his tail and perking up. He knew he was safe. Coal does need time to decompress from his experience being stray and then landing in the noisy stressful shelter. But, he is quickly on the road to mental recovery with warm cozy dog beds and trustful humans in his world now. Check back for updates while Coal begins his new journey in life.
