Foster Update #2 - Pia is super sweet and has me totally wrapped around her paw! She came to us with little exposure to inside the house family living and everything is new to her. She is like a 6 month old puppy in a 4 year old body! Here are some insights about this sweet girl: *She is curious about everything. She has learned to navigate the backyard by using the doggie door. She does not being left alone unless she is in her crate which is her safe space. *She is learning how to walk better on a leash. *She loves to eat and is very food/treat motivated, which will help with training. Takes treats gently and has no resource guarding. *Loves the resident 9 yr old Lab and follows him everywhere, but is also respectful of him when he tells her he has had enough of her “kisses”. *She has mastered “Sit” with a hand single and help from watching my Lab when he sits for treats. *She loves to drag around clothes, towels, boxes, anything she can get into! So puppy proofing the house is a must. *House training is a work in progress. She does not alert that she has to go out but if I keep the door open she will go out on her own. *She saw my Gardner through the door and let out the largest barrage of barks I have ever heard. She also does ’talk” sometimes when she wants something. *She will get into the car with encouragement. She jumps on the floor in the back seat and then up on the seat. Rides really well, getting out of the car is a work in progress. *Goes in her crate at night and sleeps straight through. Will go in during the day with a treat when I need to go out. *She loves looking out the window and watching TV! Pia still needs to be spayed. Due to her deafness she will need a family that is willing to train her accordingly. She needs another dog sibling in her family who will be patient and show her the ropes. I would say no small children due to her deafness and tendency to startle easily. She has the sweetest face and disposition. She is very loving, curious and kind of goofy. She is a diamond in the rough but she will be an amazing dog. Foster Update #1 - Pia has been determined to have limited hearing, we are not certain whether she is completely deaf or can hear to some degree. She will occasionaly startle to a loud noise and other times not react. Weekend Foster Notes - 1. Pia is a total sweetheart. Home is her safe space, she is learning to go out for walks and explore the outdoors. She has come a long way in 3 days. 2. Takes treats gently. No resource guarding. I can pet her, touch her bowl and add more food to her bowl while she is eating. 3. She's a total foodie. Enjoys snacking on treats, bananas, boiled eggs etc. 4. I have not heard her bark even once. She is a deep sleeper, when its time for her nightly pee walk before bedtime, sometimes I have to nudge her to shake her awake to go for that walk. 5. She is my shadow and follows me around the house. 6. She doesn't know any commands. 7. She has met a few dogs with varying energy levels on her walk and has been calm and gentle with them. She is also very mellow when meeting new people. 8. She is not 100% housebroken, but getting there. Pia will benefit from having another dog in the house.
