Foster Update #3 - Her ideal family:
- Able to provide ample training and structure
- Home more than away
- No cats, small animals, or small humans
Other:
- 8 months of puppy going on 8 weeks. She is FULL of energy that I suspect has not been allowed to blow off up until now.
- Smart girl. Needs structure and "a job" or she will be naughty.
- Rides really well in the car - Loves to go bye-bye.
- Sleeps well in the crate at night. Going to be doing some day time training with her.
- Walks fairly well on leash when on a gentle leader.
- No cats, small animals, or small children. Bella has a high "play" drive and will run them over.
- Knows sit, down, paw, wait, stay. Working on drop it and leave it. Remember, 8 months going on 8 weeks. Her Recall will be next on the "working on" list.
- Will jump up, can be mouthy.
Again, she is very sweet and just needs a family able to help see her through this big puppy stage.
Foster Update #2 As she recovers from spay-
* very sweet and wants to be around her humans. She is so deserving of love and is looking for a family to give her all the snuggles she needs!
*has puppy energy but will reflect your mood if you are calm and will start to calm down
*loves walks! once i grab the leash she runs to the door and is ready to go! she *is excited to see other dogs and humans
*knows her commands like sit and shake very well
*is potty trained and prefers to use the restroom on her walks instead of in the backyard.
*she sleeps through the night without having to use the restroom and is not in a rush to potty once she wakes up. She is able to hold it for a while.
*she is very curious and likes to know what you are up to. She is like a shadow and will happily follow you around the house and sit at your feet.
*doesn’t like to take pills - she spits them out unless they are wrapped in food. She doesn’t even fall for the peanut butter trick! I have been smashing the pill within a banana and that seems to do the trick and pill pockets work too
*in the mornings after her food and walk, she goes into her crate and rests, but by lunch time she is ready to play
*she is very smart so I think she will pick up any training fast
*she does not jump on any furniture and lays in her bed
*she has been better about jumping out of excitement and has been sitting patiently to be petted after being let out of her crate in the morning
Update from Vacation Foster - Bella is absolutely amazing with a gorgeous silky coat.
1. Very affectionate and loves to cuddle. Wants to be around her humans all the time.
2. Is a big foodie. Loves eating boiled eggs, bully stick, apples, banana etc.
3. She walks well on the leash with occassional pulling if she spots another dog or human. She is easily redirected with treats, so that's what I do. After the first day, I switched her from the prong to a body harness and she walks just fine. We took her to the beach yesterday and had the prong on since it was a new place for her with lots of humans and dogs around. We transitioned her to the harness after 25 mins of walking.
4. She did not want to get into the water at the beach, perhaps she just needs more exposure. She tolerated the bath after the beach trip.
5. She knows sit, down and shake. Someone trained her, perhaps the family that returned her or the breeder. I think she also knows "touch", whenever we are on a walk and I say touch she boops her nose against the back of my hand.
6. She is housebroken. She had one pee accident. She drank a lot of water after her evening walk, so probably couldn't hold it anymore.
7. She tried to test boundaries with us on day 1 during dinner. She ate her dinner and when we sat down for our dinner, she was very vocal. We ignored her and continued our meal. She hasn't done that since then. She will still walk around while are are eating hoping to be fed human food, but we have been firm with her and she now knows that she will not be getting any human food. She's a quick learner.
8. She jumps on us when excited, In the mornings once she's out of the crate she gets excited and will jump for a few mins. If you redirect her with treats, she stops jumping.
9. She sleeps through the night in the crate. I keep the crate door open during the day and she occassionally goes into it for a bit and then hangs out with us.
10. She rode very well in the car for the beach trip, not sure if it was because I rode in the back seat with her. She was laying down and napping for the most part.
11. She is a sock thief. She will grab the sock as you are trying to put them on or will grab it just as you take them off and wants you to chase her. She doesn't chew or rip them. Similarly, she does not rip her stuffed toys.
Introduction - Bella is a sweet petite young girl. She came to Lab Rescuers after being returned to the breeder for unknown family issues. Bella is a typical puppy with bursts of energy - she loves to instigate play with other dogs - then takes a break for a nap. She rode well in the cars for transport, walks pretty well on leash and seems potty trained. She is being vetted and will go to foster soon, so watch for updates as we get to know her needs and find her ideal home.
