Foster Update 02/05/24: Charlie has been with me for about two weeks now. For the first couple of days, he was aloof from us but quickly warmed up with another dog in the house. He seems to get his confidence by being around another dog of either his same age or older. He settled nicely and is not a Velcro dog. He entertains himself with all of the hard chew toys. Charlie does have some fears that he is working through. He was scared of the broom and vacuum by barking and running to hide. That is typically how he shows fear. But as we slowly introduced the broom over the past week, he has learned to ignore it. He just avoids being in the same room. Charlie will need someone who is patient and willing to understand that Charlie can get spooked by simple things such as shaking a trash bag or standing up too quickly. But he is never aggressive about it. He will bark but then settle down. With my cat in the house, Charlie loves to play and chase. My cat is very dog-savvy and enjoys playing with Charlie, but it might be best for him in a home without a cat since most normal cats don’t enjoy playing with dogs. Charlie is like a large, energetic puppy. Charlie enjoys water! He will gladly enjoy trips to the beach or a backyard with a pool or pond. He is a strong swimmer and is smart to learn where the stairs are to exit the pool, but a pool is not required for his future home. We are working on his leash manners, as he tends to pull. He does get curious and can sometimes bark at strangers and other dogs while on a walk, but it is quickly redirected with food! He is very food motivated. He knows how to “sit” and “wait” patiently. And he rings the backdoor bell whenever he needs to go outside. We are also teaching him how to fetch and not to jump on people. He crates very well whenever we need to leave the house and at night. He sleeps in a covered crate with his bed and chew toys at night, and during the day, we leave it uncovered whenever we are not home. Charlie doesn’t destroy his bed and is crate trained. He does not whine or bark whenever my husband gets up early in the morning to leave for work. Charlie settles in nicely, and we would also feed him in the crate with a slow feeder. Overall, Charlie is a wonderful and sweet boy looking for a home with another dog and ideally, no young children. He is very strong and doesn’t always realize how big he is. He is a love who wants an active family to take him on adventures, walks, hikes, and lots of swims. No young children in the home due to Charlie’s high energy and sometimes fear of young kids. Only homes with other dogs in the home will be considered.
